You just dumped the trash and the bin looks empty, right? But you lift the lid and that awful smell-it hits you anyway. Sound familiar? This happens to almost every homeowner in North Kingstown at some point and there’s a real, simple reason behind it.
An empty bin isn't a clean bin. Not really. Those trash bins have a thin, sticky film. It clings to the plastic long after your trash bags are gone. That film is a mix of grease, juice, and tiny bits of food that never made it out with the weekly pickup. Bacteria absolutely love that stuff.
Once bacteria move in, they don't just pack up and leave because the bin looks bare. They stay and since it's nice and warm inside the bin, they begin to grow. What most people don't think about much is that the smell isn't truly about what's sitting in the can at that exact moment. It's about all the stuff that soaked into the plastic walls over weeks and months before that.
What's the difference between garbage can cleaning and trash bin cleaning?
Honestly, nothing, they're the same service, just some customers reference bins as garbage or trash and others say "bins" or "cans". "Garbage can" tends to be how homeowners talk; "trash bin" sometimes shows up more in commercial contexts.
You should clean your trash bin at least once a month to keep odors away. In North Kingstown's warmer months, every two weeks works even better. Bacteria build up fast in the heat, so waiting longer lets the smell get worse. A regular schedule stops grease and juice from soaking deep into the plastic. If you already smell a strong odor between cleanings, that's a sign buildup has started. Catching it early makes the job easier and keeps your bin from turning into a bacteria magnet.
You can absolutely clean you trash bins yourself however, getting water hot enough to actually sanitize (your garden hose can't), and deal with the wastewater (it's not supposed to go in the storm drain), is the hardest part. Not to mention it's a dirty disgusting job and most DIY-ers try it one time and then call us.
Do I have to sign a contract?
No. We don't do contracts. You can change frequency, pause, or cancel at any point. We'd rather earn the business each month and we offer one-time cleans if you want to try it out first before committing to a monthly service.
Are the cleaning products safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use plant-based, biodegradable sanitizers and deodorizers. They're safer than most household cleaners, and there's no residue to worry about by the time the can comes back to your house.
No, a garden hose rinse does not kill the smell. Cold water knocks loose surface dirt, but it can't reach bacteria hiding deep in the plastic. Many North Kingstown homeowners make this mistake and feel relieved for a day or two, only to have the odor return just as strong. The smell comes from a living bacteria colony, not just visible trash. Only hot water and real scrubbing break down that layer completely, which is why quick rinsing never solves the problem for long.
What happens to the dirty water?
It stays in our truck. We collect 100% of the runoff during cleaning and transport it to an approved disposal site. Nothing reaches your driveway, lawn, or the storm drain. This matters in Rhode Island, where stormwater enforcement is real.
Do you clean commercial cans or dumpsters?
We clean smaller commercial cans — restaurants, offices, small retail. Full-size commercial dumpsters are a different setup; call us to talk it through and we'll either help directly or point you somewhere that can.
Do you service during the winter?
We pause regular service from December through February when freezing temperatures make the equipment impractical. We'll let you know your last cleaning of the year and reach out when spring service starts back up. No charges during the pause.
Coastal spots like Wickford often deal with extra moisture from bay humidity, which can make bin odor worse. That damp air seeps under lids and keeps bacteria-friendly conditions going even between rainy days. Inland areas still get plenty of heat-driven odor, just with less humidity working against them. Either way, the underlying cause is the same sticky film of grease and bacteria. Location changes the intensity, not the actual chemistry causing the smell in the first place.
